Arlington, Virginia, January 3, 2003 (CIDI) - The Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) is pleased to announce that it has relocated its headquarters operations.

The CIDI will work at the new location with Heartlands International, Inc., and continue to serve as a resource for information on current international disaster situations as well as provide valuable guidance on appropriate international disaster relief.

The Center was originally created under the aegis of Volunteers in Technical Assistance, in 1988. Since that time, the program has expanded its services and increased its staff. Since its inception, the Center has handled hundreds of thousands of public inquiries related to international emergencies. This expertise has earned the Center a reputation as a valuable resource to the public, as well as U.S. government agencies, foreign embassies and international corporations.

The Center for International Disaster Information is committed to:

  • reduce the incidence of inappropriate donations for international relief activities; and
  • provide both the public and private sectors with the tools and information to make informed decisions regarding preparedness, mitigation and prevention activities (PMP) as well as disaster response.

OUTREACH PROGRAM targets individuals, groups, corporations, foreign embassies and others in support of appropriate international disaster assistance. It has established a forum of communication and action through a network of entities in and outside of government circles.

TRAINING activities include a skilled roster of trained volunteers for the CIDI hotline service and programs to educate the public about appropriate international disaster response. Information systems comprise the CIDI webpage, listserv and the Center telecommunications network for emergency response providing:

  • current disaster situation reports (UN, Red Cross, U.S. Govt., etc.);
  • guidance on current international disaster needs and how to provide appropriate assistance;
  • links and referrals to relief organizations operating in-country;
  • relevant articles, surveys, quotes, etc., to increase ready-alert capabilities; and
  • information and contacts within the international relief community.
