Arlington, Virginia, September 4, 2003 (CIDI) – Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice, Research, Teaching and Service,
Georgetown University, hosted the Center for International Disaster
Information (CIDI) staff, exhibit and presentation at their annual Make a
Difference Fair held on campus on September 4, 2003.
The Center for Social Justice, Research, Teaching and Service is organized to
mobilize Georgetown University scholarly resources to promote and expand the
incorporation of community service activities and social justice practice within
the curriculum. The Center’s Office of Volunteer and Public Service (VPS) offers
students the opportunity to provide service that addresses issues of social
justice on the local, national and international levels. The Center facilitates
reflection on service, and guides student service and social justice groups
through various stages of development.
Originally, because of inclement weather, the Fair was opened indoors at 11:00
A.M. at Poulton Hall. Finally, the weather cooperated, and by midday. CIDI staff and 22 other exhibitors made their presentations in the University’s
"Red Square." Throughout the day, more than 2,000 students crisscrossed the
Square to attend their classes. Many of these students stopped at the CIDI
exhibit, to learn about appropriate emergency relief response, and register
for CIDI volunteer training. Several of the professors also stopped to ask
questions and receive CIDI information packets. The Fair exhibition was a
perfect opportunity to meet the student leaders and their teachers. and the
CIDI staff received a warm and responsive reception.
Students and their Professors will go back to their friends and families, and
share what they learned about how best individuals, groups and others can
provide assistance to victims of disaster around the globe.
