Arlington, Virginia,
January 23, 2002 (CIDI) - The Center for International Disaster Information
(CIDI) continued its off-site training program to the Fairfax County
Government. The second training session
at the Fairfax County Government offices was performed for personnel doing
social work at the Fairfax County Region 2 Systems Management and Human
Services Office.
Trainees were personnel whose focus is linking callers
with resources in the community to meet their critical needs. Region 2 embraces
the highest percentage of multi-cultural residents in Fairfax County. Their clients represent the Farsi, French,
German, Greek, Korean, Somali, Spanish, Urdu/Hindi, and Vietnamese-speaking
communities. Their callers range from people seeking services for themselves, to
people seeking services for relatives or friends, to human services providers
seeking services for their clients. Individual client services reach a number of more than 55,000 persons
per year.
The purpose of the CIDI training was to present information
about appropriate in-kind donation activities for international disaster relief
and to establish a forum of communication and action through a network of
entities in and outside of government circles—corporations, industries, local
and federal governments, etc. The
Region 2 staff has extensive experience working with people from all parts of
the world, and work directly with the international community in Fairfax
County. The exchange of information
between CIDI staff and Fairfax County personnel ranged from appropriate
donations, to preparedness and prevention activities, as well as public
education and lessons learned from previous disasters.
The Fairfax Human Services staff also shared with the
CIDI staff their particular experiences during previous international
disasters. They were acutely perceptive
to the appropriate donations requirements. The Team Leader stated that the information
"was helpful and encouraged interaction." She also recommended a training referral to
the CIDI Director. Another staff member stated that the training “provided
insight into what disaster relief involves."
Others said that it was "educational and informative" and several agreed
to serve as volunteers to work with the Center in the event of a disaster.
