Celebration of
International Disaster Reduction Day
Press Release: 8 October 2003

Arlington, Virginia, October 8, 2003 (CIDI) - The United Nations proclaimed the 1990’s the "International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction." International Disaster Reduction Day is celebrated the second Wednesday of each October. This year the event fell on October 8 and highlighted hydro-meteorological hazards such as floods, droughts, landslides, tropical cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons.

In recognition of this important day, the International Services Department of the American Red Cross, the Organization of American States and the Pan American Health Organization jointly hosted an "Open House" for the international Disaster Relief Community. This wonderful event took place at the International Response Operations Center of the American Red Cross’ new office building located at 2025 E Street, NW in Washington, DC.

CIDI joined the host organizations as well as the other exhibitors to promote greater understanding and awareness about disasters, the natural hazards that cause them, and steps that people can take to mitigate their effects. CIDI’s message -- providing information and guidance in support of appropriate international disaster relief -- was well received by members of the donor community, development banks, international and non-governmental organizations and area consulting firms working in disaster preparedness.
