The Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) would like
to take this opportunity to honor Suited for Change!
This private, non-profit based in the District of Columbia (DC) offers
low-income women assistance in transitioning to the workforce. The organization
provides females with business attire, career counseling, and continuing education
opportunities upon the completion of job training and/or readiness programs
with over 100 partnerships the organization has with various social service
programs through out the DC, Virginia, and Maryland. Since 1992, Suited for
Change has launched more than 10,000 area women into the labor market.
As does CIDI, Suited for Change educates American corporations and the general
public on the "appropriateness" of donations. Ms. Mary-Frances Wain,
Suited for
Change's Executive Director, has mastered the concept of intelligent generosity
from her own experience. "We help donors make good decisions about what to donate
to Suited for Change by posing this question: Would you personally wear this
item on an interview tomorrow? If the answer is yes, Suited for Change needs
it." A new business suit gives an individual the needed boost to make a positive
impression on a job interview and the confidence to take the steps toward
financial independence.
Since its inception in 1988, CIDI has worked with both the public and the
private sector to minimize inappropriate donations in response to international
emergencies and to maximize the benefit of US public support for those
affected by disaster. "One of our biggest problems is donated clothing for
international disaster relief. Used clothing is rarely, if ever, an
appropriate donation for relief activities. Clothing donations are never a
priority such as food or medicines distributed by professional relief
organizations. Many donors fail to realize that tropical climates don’t need
winter coats and mittens. Business suits, prom gowns and high heeled shoes are
also not appropriate for the immediate needs of people affected by disasters,"
explains Suzanne Brooks, Director of the CIDI.
Hurricane victims may spend weeks knee-deep in mud, and refugees may have to
walk many miles, both situations are impractical situations for wearing heels.
An informed, knowledgeable donor has the power to contribute the proper
assistance and aid needed in any situation.
CIDI and Suited for Change promote the notion that
"Cash is Best." Monetary
donations provide each with the ability to respond to constituents appropriately
and efficiently. "For example, 70% of Suited for Change clients wear sizes 16
and larger. However, only 10-15% of our donations come in these sizes. A $39
contribution enables Suited for Change to purchase a band new, plus-size suit
for one of our clients, which dramatically increases our ability to serve every
woman who walks through our door." In the case of international disaster relief,
many potential donors feel that material donations are the best way to respond.
The reality is, relief agencies are able to procure, transport and distribute
humanitarian assistance far more efficiently with cash donations from the public
and corporations. Furthermore, money allows a charity or relief agency the
ability to purchase items actually needed, verses receiving unsuitable donations.
Most importantly, CIDI and Suited for Change operate with the same philosophy:
helping those most in need of assistance.
Clothing donations from the public or corporations are not appropriate for the
CIDI's work in international disaster assistance, but they may be perfect for
Suited for Change. "We often receive offers of new designer clothing and shoes
which can be put to much better use by organizations such as Suited for Change,"
explains Ms. Brooks. The CIDI receives an outpouring of donations after large
international emergencies from the people and corporations in the United States
that fit the needs of Suited for Change’s clientele. By working together, proper
donations management can benefit so many people in need – the right way.
Congratulations to Suited for Change's Ms. Mary-Frances Wain and staff for their
outstanding work in the community! We look forward to working together to
providing the right kind of assistance to those who need it most.
