At 4:53 PM on January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook Haiti. The epicenter of the earthquake was only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince, the bustling capital city of the Caribbean country. One of the most destructive natural disasters in history, the quake reduced buildings to rubble, instantly taking lives and destroying homes. The Government of Haiti estimates that nearly 230,000 people died, 300,000 were injured, and over 1.5 million were displaced after their homes were damaged or destroyed.
