On October 21, the Government of Haiti (GoH) officially confirmed a cholera outbreak. Cases have been primarily concentrated in Artibonite Department in north-central Haiti, with additional cases reported in one area of Central Department. On October 22, U.S. Ambassador Kenneth H. Merten issued a disaster declaration due to the cholera outbreak. Immediately after the declaration, USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) existing Haiti-based staff responded to emergency health needs.

On October 26, USAID deployed a ten-person Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to Haiti, including technical advisors for health and water, sanitation and hygiene, to assess humanitarian needs and coordinate assistance and a logistician to assist in the receipt and delivery of non-food items. Based on the initial needs assessments, USAID/OFDA will send commodities including 2 million sachets of oral rehydration salts and 1,000 cholera beds for distribution. USAID/Haiti, USAID/OFDA, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to monitor the situation and respond to immediate needs.
