Hurricane Iris - The Caribbean
7 October 2001


This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any
country.

1.  The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 1500 GMT, 7
October 2001, the center of Hurricane Iris was located near latitude 17.4
north, longitude 77.9 west or about 85 miles (135 km) west-southwest of
Kingston, Jamaica, or 260 miles (420 km) east-southeast of Grand Cayman.
Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/hr) with higher gusts.

2.  Iris is moving toward the west near 17 mph or 28 km/hr. On this path
Iris will be heading toward the Yucatan peninsula.

3.  At 1500 GMT, the following warnings/watches were in effect:

4.  Hurricane Warning: remains in effect for Jamaica and the Cayman
Islands.

5.  Hurricane Watch: The Government of Mexico has issued a hurricane watch
for the east coast of Yucatan from Cabo Catoche southward.
